Maps?
These maps refelect the inherent structure of the music collection. Similar pieces of music are located close to each other on the map. For details how these maps are created see the Technique section.
The 7x7 SOM is the result obtained using the Self-Organizing Map algorithm. For example, in the upper right corner of the map is a cluster of classical music. The SOM-Islands Maps illustrate the relationship between the 7x7 SOM and the Islands visualization. The numbers 2 and 3 in the brackets refer to the terra-forming parameter. The default value for this demonstration is 1, however, for all maps the settings of 2 and 3 are available as well. The Islands Maps demonstrate the effects of the terra-forming parameter. Low values (starting at 1) lead to several scattered islands, and higher values lead to one big continent (highest value available here is 3). The different parameter settings give insight into the cluster structure. The Islands of Music are the main interface to the music collection. clicking on the white balls, which represent music, will play the corresponding MP3 file. The Labeled Islands Maps demonstrate how landmarks can be labeled to support navigation on the map. |
