The following sections briefly describe the basic techniques involved in creating the
Islands of Music. The biggest challenge is to calculate the similarity of two pieces of music. This is discussed in the
Feature Extraction section. The similarities are analyzed using the Self-Organizing Map (SOM) algorithm. The algorithm together with the results are presented in the
Clustering section. Finally, in the
User Interface section, the novel visualization technique for the SOM results are briefly presented together with methods to label the mountains and hills.
All details and references to the presented techniques as well as thorough evaluations can be found in the
thesis. Furthermore, a small
demonstration utilizing these techniques is available.
