The project titled “Dialect classification by human and artificial intelligence” led by Michael Pucher and Lorenz Gutscher has been approved as one of the 6 FWF Top Citizen Science Projects.
The primary objective is to develop an Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) system dedicated to dialect classification. The system will identify crucial frequency regions and features, offering transparency in its decision-making process. As part of the project, participants are encouraged to engage with a user-friendly web interface, allowing them to record and analyze their own dialect. Moreover, the citizens’ knowledge will be used to test if human classification draws attention to similar regions as an XAI system does. This gives citizens a point of contact with the current (often overwhelming) development of AI systems and connects them with scientific research.
