Oesterreichisches Forschungsinstitut fuer Artificial Intelligence (OeFAI) Schottengasse 3, A-1010 Wien Tel.+43-1-53532810,5336112 ------------------------------------------------------------------------- VORTRAG ******* Prof.Dr.Luc STEELS Free University of Brussels Studying the Origins of Intelligence through Autonomous Robots -------------------------------------------------------------- An experimental setup is described for studying how intelligence may have originated in physical systems. The setup consists of a robot ecosystem that includes a number of small robots and challenges for the robots in terms of parasites as well as opportunities in the form of a charging station. A number of biologically inspired mechanisms are being investigated for generating more behavioral complexity in the robots: adaptivity, selectionism, self-organisation, level formation, and representation formation. The talk will focus on one series of surprising experiments that demonstrate how it has indeed been possible to arrive at more complexity. Luc Steels is director of the VUB AI Laboratory (Brussels) and holds at present the Sony sabbatical chair at the Sony Computer Science Laboratory in Tokyo.
