Cambridge, USA Modeling Intelligent Agents That Assist and Entertain Users ----------------------------------------------------------- For the past 7 years I have been modeling and building intelligent autonomous agents. I have worked with different types of agents: * Robotic agents, such as the 6-legged insect-like robot "Genghis", which I programmed to make it teach itself to walk, * Computer animated agents, such as the agents of the ALIVE system, which coexist and interact with users in a virtual reality, and finally, * "Cyberspace" agents, or agents that perform transactions on behalf of users in the computer and network world, for example, agents that find articles that the user is interested in, or agents that filter your email or schedule meetings on your behalf. I will give an overview of these different types of agents and the techniques used to develop them. I will illustrate the discussion with a lot of videotapes. I will conclude with my vision for the future of Human Computer Interaction: a world in which a person is surrounded by virtual characters that assist and entertain the user.
