In this talk, I will present a program that automatically extracts these beat locations from musical performance data in either audio or MIDI formats. A simple clustering algorithm finds regularities in the times between the beginnings of notes, and a multiple-hypothesis search is used to choose the sequence of beat locations best fitting a model of musical accent and timing. The system will be demonstrated in both its automatic and interactive modes, performing tempo and beat extraction on music of various styles (e.g. classical, pop, jazz).
